Year 10 Sundarbans Case Study

You have been asked to write a case study on the Sundarban mangrove forests in Bangladesh. In case you have lost the handout here are the instructions! You can click on links below to research your case study (and if you have lost the handout):

You have been issued with a handout on the Sundarbans. Read it and take notes. Look at some of the extra resources online (page 4). Use the links below if you have lost the handout!

Your task is to produce a case study about the Sundarbans (2 A4 pages). I suggest you use sub-headings to help you break down your work:

  • Your case study must include a hand-drawn map and description of where the Sundarbans are located.
  • You must mention why the Sundarbans are important. Tip: biodiversity (physical) and human economic activity (human).
  • You must mention how the Sundarbans are being threatened. Tip: climate change (physical), tourism (human), deforestation (human)
  • You must mention some of the solutions introduced to save the mangrove forest.

Year 9 project - Ghana Fact File

You have to produce a "Ghana - Fact File" using Word or Publisher. Use the following websites to help you collect information:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghana

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/gh.html

You should include the following in your fact file:

  • Birth Rate, Death Rate, Fertility Rate, Adult Literacy Rate, Life Expectancy, Infant Mortality Rate
  • Exports (what does Ghana export to other countries?)
  • Imports (what does Ghana import from other countries?)
  • GNP or GDP per capita
  • Debt to other countries

I would also like you to give a little history about the country (what did the country used to be called and why?). You should also include the flag of Ghana and some pictures that show the physical and human landscape of Ghana. You will have a few lessons to complete this.

Have fun!

Year 12 TOK Presentations - IMPORTANT

You have all received a TOK presentations handout that contains all relevant information on your presentation and what it must include. Please ask me for a handout if you have misplaced it or not received it (very important!). You can also DOWNLOAD this handout by clicking on the link on the right side of this blog page.

I would like you to get yourselves into groups (3 max) and decide on the topic of your presentation. Once you have done this you must respond to this post (comments link below), listing your group members and topic. Deadline is Tuesday 12th May (Day 1).

I will then assign you a date for your presentation. All presentations will start after May week. The first two presentations will be on Day 1, 27th May.

Remember: This is an integral part of your assessment for TOK and if you do not complete it you risk failing the course and therefore your IB Diploma!

The deadline for doing this is: Tuesday 12th May (Day 1)

This deadline is absolute and you will not be given the opportunity to submit your proposal after this date.

Year 10 Rivers Coursework

You will have received your instructions in the form of a booklet. Your homework this cycle for next Day 5 (Friday 8th May) is the following:

  • Select your 2 hypotheses (one from list A, one from list B). You can do a third if you like (either select it from list A or list B or come up with your own).
  • Write your introduction (which should contain the aim of your project, locational background and justification of hypotheses).
  • Write your methodology.
  • Data presentation (where you present your data in the form of graphs, fieldsketches, photographs, tables etc. - all depending on which hypotheses you have chosen).

Make sure you read the entire booklet before you start writing and follow any advice given. You can also download the booklet using the "resources download" link in the right hand column of this blog page. There you will also find advice on various hypotheses and a very good pdf document on river field-work techniques (like how to use a clinometer, measure velocity with a flow meter etc.). I encourage you all to download all of these resources and put them onto a pen-drive.

The final hand-in date for your coursework is Friday, 5th June. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Good luck and have fun! :)
