Year 10 Coastal Management Essay Question - Due next Day 1 (Wednesday, 18th November)

You have been asked to write a short essay (c. 500 words).

The title for the essay is:

What strategies can be put in place to control the impact of wave erosion upon human economic activity? You should give an example from an area you have studied.

I want you to come up with an essay structure before you begin writing. Here are some tips and recommendations:

Draw up a list of keywords that you think will be useful for the essay before you do anything else!

Structure:

Introduction

- Outline what the essay is going to be about
- Introduce your chosen study area (case study or case studies if you choose 2 - e.g. Scarborough / Sundarbans / Maldives etc. - you can take a look at the "Coasts" chapter in the New Wider World for extra case studies).

Main body of essay

- Discuss how wave activity causes wave erosion
- Discuss how wave erosion can impact human economic activity along coastlines.
- Discuss the solutions (management strategies, hard and soft) that people use to protect their coastlines from erosion, using the details from your chosen study area (or areas).
- You could mention the positive and negative impacts that these management strategies have on the coastline and its inhabitants.

Conclusion

- Tie together your thoughts and discuss how you feel coastlines "should" be protected (in your opinion).

The final essay is to handed in next Wednesday (DAY 1), 18th November.
